Fairgrounds Road, Wausaukee, WI

Ballas Park History:

Ballas Ball Field is located on a parcel originally owned by Tom Ballas and is located East of the Wausaukee Fairgrounds on Fairgrounds road.

The original field was developed in 1974 as a softball field for the local teams that were sponsored by local businesses.  As interest in baseball grew additions were added to accommodate Little League, women's leagues, and in 1980 High School team practices. Numerous additions were added to refine the grounds such as toilets, fencing, bleachers, and a pavilion for refreshment sales. The pavilion was built to assist groups in selling food and drinks which raises money to continue those programs.  Tournaments in the past had been held once a year during the Marinette County Fair and drew up to 30 teams.

A playground of tire structures and wooden platforms was constructed by the Lions Club south of the current second field. The playground area was later removed due to changes in the law about materials and structures that could be used for community playgrounds.  Future additions for play ground equipment will be made as funding is available.

Lighting was added to the west field to allow evening games.  The second East Field was built to accommodate the increased use of the area. Materials were donated by the Lions club.  Fencing, diamonds, new field grading, dugouts and bleachers were all installed over a period of several years to complete the East Field. The new electronic scoreboard was donated by J&R Auto and was installed for the 2009 baseball season.

Ballas Field was renamed in August of 2011 to Steve Stumbris Senior Memorial Park in honor of the Stumbris family members who have assisted in developing the field to its present state.

Persons donating money will be listed on a sign to be erected at the park to honor their donation.

Playscape Completion 2012

Visit our new Playscape playground and Basketball court set up at Stumbris Memorial Park on Fairgrounds Road east of the Marinette County Fairgrounds. The playground is surrounded with a  bark chip surface to prevent injuries, lots of climbing and play structure to keep young children engaged in play activity. For the older kids/adults there is a full size basket ball court with hoops behind the play area. Touch the photo for a larger view of the Playscape. Many thanks to the Wausaukee Recreation Association for their work & effort in making this possible.
